My IBS Journey...
I'm sure you can relate. I have found myself clenching my cheeks together and holding my poo in with all of my might way too many times to count. Whether it was during class or during a conference call, I felt like I would find any excuse to get out of class or the call so I could run and (hopefully) make it to the bathroom where I could finally relieve myself.
The urge to go comes on strong and with enough force that I think I won't be able to hold it in. If you can't tell...this is IBS-Diarrhea. Luckily, I never got the painful bloat but I would get some abdominal pain when I felt the urge to poo.
What accompanies my urgent and loose stools is stress, anxiety, embarrassment, and a spot of depression. What the hell is my body doing? Why do I have such urgent poos? I eat pretty healthy, what the heck is causing me these liquid messes? From then on, it's "Well, idk what I can eat or can't eat because everything seems to give me issues!"
So, what is a girl supposed to eat?
Now, I will admit that I still don't completely have my IBS-D figured out. But since dealing with these symptoms for the past 7 years, I do have a handle on which foods and situations make my IBS worse.
For me, caffeine, dairy, and alcohol wreak havoc on my gut. I also need to eat my vegetables cooked as I have trouble digesting raw veggies. Along with lifestyle changes and staying away from the foods that cause me problems, the urgency of my poos is managed; however, my poos are still not well-formed.
My IBS Nutrition Philosophy
After seeing how well eliminating certain foods, curating a supplement protocol unique for IBS, and managing my stress helped my IBS symptoms, I knew I was on the right track. I strongly believe that the foods we eat and how we manage stress in our day-to-day lives have a multi-directional impact on our overall health.
But, I'm not here to say what has worked for me is going to work for you. I'm here to help you uncover what works for you.
